FANHS PA announces that honored elder from Hawaii, Mr. Domingo Los Banos, age 86, former FANHS Trustee, educator, WWII veteran, and project manager of the film "Untold Triumph" about Filipino veterans of World War II will be a guest speaker at our October 14th Filipino American History Month Celebration!

As a guest of Philadelphia's National Constitution Center http://constitutioncenter.org/ Manong Domingo is also featured in the National Constitution Center's upcoming exhibit Fighting for Democracy: Who is the “We” in “We the People”? http://constitutioncenter.org/ncc_press_Fighting_for_Democracy.aspx from the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. He'll be part of the exhibit's opening ceremonies on October 14.

FANHS 14^TH National Conference – Albuquerque, New Mexico

Emilie Underwood, Conference Chair reports the next conference – under the auspices of the Rio Grande Chapter – will be June 28-30, 2012. The site is the Marriott Hotel located at I-40 and Louisiana Street in Albuquerque New Mexico. Ester Tambor is conference co-chair. Committees have been meeting to plan the 14^th National Conference.

Filipino American History Month

Filipino American History Month was celebrated in many parts of the United States – and in a variety of ways. Thanks to all trustees, chapters and other members who brought this important date to the attention of organizations, institutions and the general public in their geographic area.

Vangie Buell has been recovering nicely … Pete Jamero turned 80 … For three months Fred Cordova has been researching (in the NPA) and writing the draft of his newest book – a chronology of Filipino American History … Fascinating read is Dr. Patricia Brown’s new book: Kula San – Hawaii’s Healing Place … January the Bay Area FANHS Consortium had their holiday party as a fundraiser for FANHS National with Mel Orpilla and Larry Ascero hosting. The event was held in the beautiful 106-year-old mansion in Mare Island Vallejo owned by Larry and Lilibeth Ascero. In the early 1920s Larry’s grandparents were servants in this mansion.

Bringing together community leaders from diverse organizations characterizes FANHS PA Chapter's annual Filipino American History banquet. FANHS PA's 3rd annual banquet drew leaders from the Filipino Executive Council of Greater Philadelphia (FECGP a coalition of 20+ Filipino orgs), Asian Americans United (AAU), Asian American Women's Coalition (AAWC), alumni from Temple University's TUPAC, Folk Arts Cultural Treasures School and many more to HK Golden Phoenix Restaurant in Philadelphia's Chinatown on October 22. With a 10-course dinner, raffle and auction, performances by Drexel's FISDU and the St. Augustine Church Choir plus dancing led by "DJ Pure J," everyone truly enjoyed the event! Mr. Gem Daus, professor of Filipino American Studies at the University of Maryland, spoke of how he engages his students in making connections between Filipino American history and contemporary struggles for justice. Dr. Rommel Rivera, coordinator of the upcoming FECGP and AAWC sponsored Philadelphia exhibit of the Smithsonian's "Singgalot" photo exhibit, invited guests to the November 19th opening. Thanks to everyone -- donors, supporters, attendees, performers -- who celebrated!

The Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) Vallejo Chapter and the Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum screened "An Untold Triumph", the story of the US Army's 1st & 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments. Film-maker, Marrisa Aroy, was also present to discuss her new film "The Delano Manongs," the story of Larry Itliong and the Filipino pioneers who were part of the 1965 Delano Grape strike that led to the creation of the United Farm Workers.

"Filipino Martial Arts: From Kali and Escrima to Boxing"

Fans of Filipino martial arts filled the auditorium of the National Museum of American History for a wonderful program featuring a film screening of "The Great Pinoy Boxing Era" (by Corky Pasquil and Agrafino Edralin, available at http://mybarong.com/ ), a panel moderated by Gem Daus of University of Maryland at College Park featuring engaging presentations by Rosie Abriam, Gura-Fifth Degree and president CEO of the Center for Asian Pacific American Women and Professor Linda Espana-Maram of California State University, Long Beach. To close the evening, legendary martial arts Guro Dan Inosanto gave demonstrations of Kali while lecturing on Filipino martial arts. At 74, he mesmerized the crowd and did not miss a beat or breath. Dan Inosanto also spoke of his family's immigration history. He's the son of the late Mary Arca Inosanto and Sebastian Inosanto of Stockton, labor leaders who are among the founders of Trinity Presbyterian Church rooted in historic Little Manila http://littlemanila.net/

FANHS Stockton, California news: Giants Lincecum's Filipino roots in Stockton!

Dr. Dawn Bohulano Mabalon, Associate Professor of History at San Francisco State University, FANHS National Trustee and Little Manila Foundation Co-Founder writes:
"...Starting pitcher is none other than Timothy Lincecum, one of major league baseball's best ever pitchers. I had always heard that Tim Lincecum was part Filipina/o, and so I did some internet digging. Lots of media reports say that Lincecum's grandparents were immigrants from the Philippines. In fact, his roots in Filipino America go even deeper than that. Tim Lincecum is fourth generation. And this is what I found:

Please read through to the end of the article, where you will read about Rebecca "Becky" Asis, Tim Lincecum's mother, a third generation Pinay born in Seattle (according to ancestry.com records).

A second-generation Filipino-American, Becky is one of Balleriano and Philomena Asis' 10 children—eight girls, and two boys.
     Balleriano was born in Honolulu, Hi., his father Genaro Asis was born in Mindanao, Philippines; his mother Alberta Alcoy was born in Cebu City, Philippines.
    Philomena was born in Stockton, Calif., her father Leoncio Marcigan was born in Batangas, Philippines; her mother Anustasia Dominguez was born in Siquijor, Philippines.
     Some of you may remember the Asis family as one of the pioneering families in Stockton. Alberta Alcoy Asis went to Hawaii in the 1910s with her mother as a sakada and married Genaro Asis, who was a leader in the 1919 sugar strike. The Asis family later migrated to the Stockton area and then the Seattle area. Alberta Asis was one of the founding members of the Maria Clara Lodge of the Caballeros de Dimas Alang in Stockton in the 1920s and her oral history is in our FANHS archives (BA/NC81-Fil-009CA). I wish we knew more about his mother's maternal relatives, the Dominguez/Marcigan family from Stockton. My research found that Leoncio and Anastasia arrived in Los Angeles in 1924 from Hawaii. Their daughter Philomena was born in November, 1930 in Stockton. Perhaps some of you may remember them in Stockton?

Did you know about 20% of Filipinos have some Chinese ancestry? President Corazon Aquino, Cardinal Jaime Sin, and national hero Jose Rizal are some of the more famous "Tsinoys", or Chinese Filipinos. As the Philippines is so close to Fujian province, Chinese influence in Filipino culture dates back centuries and is as ubiquitous as pancit and lumpia. The first Spanish-established Chinatown was the Parian, which later became Binondo. These Chinatowns survive through massacres, revolutions, wars, and martial law.

The Filipino Youth Activities (FYA) was an award winning youth organization catering to young Filipino Americans. Founded in 1957 in Seattle - FYA offered leisure time activities for more than 40 years. Currently, the Khordobah FYA Drill Team continues the legacy …

Camp FYA is replicated in some of the cultural and educational programs enjoyed by thousands of young Filipino and Filipina Americans. During the 2010 FANHS National Conference and on the Seattle University campus, CAMP FYA will offer an entertaining blend of activities for camp participants.

Seattle (FANHS National) – Simeona (Mona) Viernes Pasquil – the first woman, more importantly the first Filipino American, to be appointed acting Lieutenant Governor of the State of California – has verbally agreed “unanimously” to be the principal speaker at the Filipino American National Historical Society’s 13th National Conference July 24 in Seattle. Lt. Gov. Pasquil will speak at the conference’s Saturday evening dinner. The three day conference is being held at Seattle University.

A third-generation Pinay from Sacramento, Calif., Mona - as all of her friends call her - was an active participant in FANHS’ Fifth National conference in 1994 at San Francisco.

Mona’s parents, Cornelio and Connie Viernes attended the First Young Filipino Peoples’ Far West Convention in Seattle. "On Thursday, October 1, the U.S. Senate passed on by unanimous consent on the U.S. Senate floor S. Res. 298, a resolution recognizing Filipino American History Month in October 2009, introduced by Senate Majority Leader, Senator Harry Reid (D-NV), and co-sponsored by Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D-HI), Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Senator John Ensign (R-NV), Senator Daniel Inouye (D-HI), and Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ). The bill text is very similar to H. Res. 780 in the U.S. House of Representatives as introduced by Congressman Bob Filner, Co-Chair of the Congressional U.S.-Philippine Friendship Caucus."

The House now has the opportunity- the obligation- to follow suit and makes its own statement on behalf of our community. Your help is needed to make our Congress do the right thing- it will NOT happen without your action! On September 25, Representative Bob Filner (D-CA) introduced House Resolution 780 (H. Res. 780) to recognize October as Filipino American History Month. The Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) has marked October as Filipino American History Month for over two decades and this important bill will provide important recognition of the contributions our community has made to the fabric of American life. The Senate passed its own version of this bill as Senate Resolution (S. Res) 298 by unanimous consent on October 1 to kick off Filipino American History Month. It is now time for the House of Representatives to do the same and pass its own version of this Resolution. This has already been an historic year for our community already. The passage of legislation for Filipino WWII veterans earlier this year marked an important victory for our communities. The Senate did its job and now recognizes Filipino American History Month and just recently on October 15, President Obama signed an Executive Order to reinstate the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, an important institution to help document and improve the federal government’s response to our communities. It is only proper that the House of Representatives recognize the contributions our community has made to the American narrative since first coming here in 1587. H Res. 780 requires at least 50 cosponsors in the House of Representatives in order to be considered for final passage. WHEREAS, The Filipino American National Historical Society
recognizes the year of 1763 as the date of the first permanent
Filipino settlement in the United States in St. Malo Parrish,
Louisiana, which set in motion the focus on the story of our
nation’s past from a new perspective by concentrating on the
economic, cultural, social, and other notable contributions that
Filipino Americans have made in countless ways toward the
development of the history of the United States; and

WHEREAS, Efforts must continue to promote the study of
Filipino American history and culture, as mandated in the mission
statement of the Filipino American National Historical Society,
because the roles of Filipino Americans and other people of color
have been overlooked in the writing, teaching, and learning of
United States history; and

WHEREAS, It is imperative for Filipino American youth to
have positive role models to instill in them the importance of
education, complemented with the richness of their ethnicity and
the value of their legacy; and

WHEREAS, California is home to over half of the Filipino
population in the United States and the location of historic Filipino
communities such as in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Stockton,
Vallejo, Delano, San Diego, and Salinas among others; now,
therefore, be it

Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
thereof concurring, That the Legislature recognizes October 2009,
the 422nd anniversary of the presence of Filipinos in California,
as a significant time to study the advancement of Filipino
Americans in the history of California and the United States, as a
favorable time of celebration, remembrance, reflection, and
motivation, and as a relevant time to renew more efforts toward
research, examination, and promulgation of Filipino American
history and culture in order to provide an opportunity for all
Californians to learn and appreciate more about Filipino Americans
and their historic contributions to California and the United States;
and be it further

Resolved, That the Legislature designates October 2009, and
every October thereafter, as Filipino American History Month;
and be it further

Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.

California Senate Passes Filipino American History Month Legislation
Senator Yee authors resolution to recognize accomplishments of Filipino Americans

SACRAMENTO – The California State Senate has unanimously approved legislation to officially recognize the accomplishments of Filipino Americans. Senate Concurrent Resolution 48, authored by Senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco/San Mateo), will declare October as Filipino American History Month.

“It is imperative that we continue efforts to promote the accomplishments of Filipino Americans,” said Yee, whose district includes one of the largest Filipino communities outside of thePhilippines. “For far too long the role of Filipinos in our national history has been ignored. Through SCR 48, we help ensure that our children learn about this important history.”
The earliest documented proof of Filipino presence in the continental United States was the date of October 18, 1587, when the first “Luzones Indios” set foot in Morro Bay, California. The Filipino American National Historical Society recognizes the year of 1763 as the date of the first permanent Filipino settlement in the United States in St. Malo Parish, Louisiana. Today, California is home to over half of the Filipino population in the United States.
In 2007, Yee successfully passed Senate Joint Resolution 5, urging Congress to pass the Filipino Veterans Equity Act and to fully restore benefits stripped from Filipino WWII veterans by the 1946 Rescission Act.

Senator Yee has long advocated for the Filipino veterans. In 2004, then Assemblyman Yee led the effort to prevent Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-Los Angeles) from eliminating the California Veterans Cash Benefit Program from the State budget. While the Governor proposed cutting the $226 per month benefit, Yee successfully fought to make sure the Veterans Program was reauthorized in the budget approved by the Legislature. Yee has also authored legislation to add the role of Filipinos in WWII to the high school social studies curriculum.

This year, Yee is authoring SB 242 to protect language as a civil right. In addition to authoring several bills regarding language access, Yee has consistently fought for the Filipino community and helped recognize the accomplishments of Filipino Americans.

In March 2006, Yee honored the contributions of Larry Itliong at a ceremony in San Francisco. Itliong, along with Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, started the farm worker movement. Yee has led various efforts to assist the Philippines after devastating earthquakes, typhoons and mudslides.

In March 2005, Yee honored the late San Francisco community activist, volunteer, and environmentalist Tess Manalo-Ventresca as the 12th Assembly District Woman of the Year.
In 2001, when the airport screeners were laid off, Yee was an outspoken supporter of the workers and his office provided resume and interview tips, and participated in job fairs to help get the workers back on their feet.
SCA 48 will next be considered by the State Assembly.

Also making history at AAAS is Dr. Rick Bonus of the University of Washington, who serves as the current National President of AAAS. While Dr. Theo Gonzalves of the University of Hawai'i (and FANHS 2006 national conference program co-chair) served as National President of AAAS in 1998 (for 45 minutes before the remainder of the AAAS board resigned -- a story we still have to fully document) Dr. Rick Bonus is the first Filipino to be elected president of AAAS.

Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) San Diego Chaper & Miramar College Diversity & International Education Committee co-sponsored the event, "Filipino Americans:
History & Scholarly Perspectives," at Miramar College on April 18, 2009. The audience of more than 70 included students and faculty from local colleges and universities as well as members of Filameda -- Filipino American Educators of San Diego.

Professor Judy Patacsil, Coordinator of International Education at Miramar College, introduced guest speakers and FANHS Trustees Dr. Joan May T. Cordova (Drexel University, Philadelphia) and Dr. Patricia Espiritu Halagao (University of Hawai'i) who co-presented a paper they'd collaboratively written with Dr. Allyson Tintiangco-Cubales (San Francisco State University), "A Critical Review of K-12 Filipina/o American Curriculum." All three professors had recently presented this paper at the American Educational Research Association's national conference in San Diego http://www.aera.net/

Patricia then introduced the audience to the http://www.ijeepney.com/ Smithsonian on-line curriculum developed by a team she directed. To close the event, Joanie presented a short version of the hour-long interactive presentation, "Filipinos in the Fields: Conflicts, Coalitions, and Connections," she developed for an April 13th event at UC San Diego's Cross Cultural Center. http://ucsdnews.ucsd.edu/newsrel/events/04-09ChavezPresentation.asp While reviewing examples of Filipino organizing (Hawai'i, Yakima Valley (WA), Stockton, and Delano), Joanie also noted that we now celebrate the 60th anniversary of the successful Filipino Agricultural Laborers Association's (FALA) asparagus strike of 1939. Besides citing both scholarly research as well as primary sources from the FANHS national archives and Filipino Oral History Project, Inc, Joanie also thanked Dr. Dawn Mabalon for sharing groundbreaking research from her forthcoming book, and Debra P. Louie and Dillon Delvo who sent audio files of Larry Itliong's lecture to the Filipino American Experiences class taught by Debra Panganiban and Evelyn Casuga in 1976.

Many thanks, too, to FANHS National Secretary Ron Buenaventura for his hospitality in San Diego, even if he missed this event because of family commitments.

Teresa Romero Jamero

Seattle, April 2, 2009 - (FANHSNATIONAL) – It is with sad news to inform the Family and friends of the Filipino American National Historical Society of the sudden death today of Teresa Romero Jamero at the age of 74.

Terri died this morning after a second complicated operation in Doctors’ Hospital in Modesto near her home at Atwater, Calif.

The “conscience of FANHS,” Terri served for two terms as National President from 1990 to 1994. Among her presidential highlights was directing the Fifth National Conference in San Francisco in 1994.

A FANHS CHARTER member, she first served in the President’s Cabinet (1984-85), as national treasurer (1984-1988), national vice president (1988-1990), then as the third national president, and as trustee from 1986 to 2001. She was a lifetime FANHS national member.

She remains a national president emerita and among trustee emeriti.

Prayers and condolences to Pete and their family.

Terri and her surviving husband, Peter Madelo Jamero, lived in Atwater, CA.

Terri, who with her family, had lived in Seattle for some 17 years, was a long-time moderator of the Filipino Youth Activities and served as 1984-85 president of the FYA Board of Directors.

Before and after her Seattle years, Terri was very active nationally and locally in Filipino American and Asian/Pacific American affairs.

HUSBAND, SOCIAL service executive, author and a personality in his own right, Peter, was a FANHS founding national vice president.

Six grown children and 15 grandchildren are the other immediate survivors, plus a host of Romero and Jamero relatives.

Throughout FIND’s history, many FANHS (Filipino American National Historical Society) leaders have supported FIND as speakers and donors. Dr. Fred Cordova, Dr. Dorothy Fujita-Rony, Oscar Penaranda, Peter Bacho, Dr. Dawn Mabalon, Dr. Patricia Espiritu Halagao, Timoteo Cordova and others have all been speakers and workshop leaders at FIND since the early 1990s. "This bit of news was mentioned to me this evening by Mariecris Gatlabayan, who is the archivist working on Mom's papers. Mom was named to be in the Alaska Women's Hall of Fame!

Thelma Buchholdt is one of 50 women (the inaugural group) to be inducted into the Alaska Women's Hall of Fame this Saturday, March 6, 2009 (6:30 pm, at the BP Center on East Benson Blvd). The list of women to be inducted includes many of Mom's friends and associates. Here's the website: "

I took this photo of Thelma at a dinner with FANHS Trustees at Sang Kee Restaurant in Philadelphia in June of 2007. We didn't know that our Philadelphia meeting of national FANHS Trustees, a book signing, and this dinner would be Thelma's last FANHS events before her death in November, 2007.

Life is short. I hope that we make the most of every opportunity.

While Thelma and other community pioneers are missed, their histories and spirits inspire us to continue the work of FANHS while building our communities and working for social justice -- the way so many before us have done.

FANHS congratulates University of Maryland, College Park: Filipino American Studies and new scholarships

We're excited that Filipino American Studies is growing on the East Coast! At the 12th biennial conference of FANHS in Anchorage, Alaska last June 2008, Juanita Tamayo-Lott organized the panel, "Inspiration, Influence, and Intrigue: the Long Reach and Hidden Impacts of Filipino American Studies since 1969," that included pioneers of the first Filipino American Studies program -- Tamayo-Lott and Dan Gonzales, as well as Gem Daus, instructor of the newest Filipino American Studies program in the US. http://fanhsis25.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html

During the second Filipino American Studies Gala on February 21, 2009 at the University of Maryland, College Park, the Filipino Cultural Association -- together with many supportive community members and organizations -- launched the Philip Vera Cruz Scholarship and the Major General (Ret.) Antonio Taguba Profiles in Courage and Leadership Scholarship at UMCP. Guest speakers included General Taguba, Kris Valderrama of the Maryland House of Delegates, and Professor Jeff Cabusao of Bryant University in Rhode Island.

FANHS PA President Kim Barroso, Vice President Cathy Madeja and I traveled to UMCP to continue to show support for Filipino American Studies and the inspiring work being done by FANHS friends in the Washington, DC area. In a letter of thanks to the Filipino Cultural Association and all those involved in the event, I wrote:

"I was most impressed by the way organizations and individuals pulled together to host a wonderful gala, create scholarships, and do the pioneering work of creating Filipino American Studies at UMCP. You're all making history on the East Coast! Big props to everyone :-)

FANHS is 100% volunteer work

Since Dr. Dorothy Laigo Cordova and Dr. Fred Cordova http://depts.washington.edu/civilr/cordovas.htm founded FANHS in 1982, they have been volunteers who now work full-time for FANHS. All projects and FANHS Chapters (now numbering 28 throughout the USA) are also run by volunteers who donate time, resources, talent, and spirit to the work of gathering and promoting Filipino American history. Everyone -- even FANHS unpaid staff, officers, and national trustees -- pays their own registration fees and travel expenses for all conferences and meetings. At each of the biennial national conferences, FANHS has maintained a tradition of finding ways to subsidize student registration and many meals. Former FANHS students -- who now include Edwina Bergano, Professor Emily Lawsin, Dr. Dawn Mabalon, Ron Buenaventura, Veronica Salcedo, and others -- now continue the tradition of supporting new generations of youth participation at various FANHS events. What many of us value most about FANHS are the opportunities to work with generations of people who are so deeply committed to our communities. FANHS Hampton Roads Chapter Hosts Pre-Inaugural Teach In

Dr. Allan and Edwina Bergano worked with regional FANHS members Joe Montano and Jian Zapata (former FANHS students :-) to set up the January 17, 2009 event at George Mason University in Arlington, VA. Among those in attendance were FANHS HR President Veronica Salcedo, and others who had participated in FANHS Hampton Roads or FACS student events through the decades such as Jojo Maralit, Mike Reyes, Alex Cena, and Roberto Jamora. Veronica Salcedo, who first attended FANHS at age 13 and is now a high school teacher, said: "Just being there with people who have all worked in our community was a great feeling...What I love about this type of discussion is that we talk honestly and respectfully. We identified problems we faced as community organizers. We proposed solutions so that future generations can take leadership roles in government, education, media, and the arts." Allan expressed the spirit of the teach in to those who could not be there: "Remember all the FANHS events we worked on? There were generations of community leaders there -- with heart."

Through the generous support of donors and volunteers —including our full time volunteers and cofounders, Drs. Dorothy & Fred Cordova, FANHS Executive Director and Archivist — the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) has gathered and promoted Filipino American history through publications,public programs, films, and artistic expressions for more than 25 years. During this holiday season, we hope that you will include FANHS in your charitable giving so that FANHS might continue to promote Filipino American history for “the next generations.”

When communities throughout the nation celebrate Filipino American History Month each October, it is because FANHS launched the very first Filipino American History Month events in 1988, with a resolution that’s been officially adopted in the state of Virginia and elsewhere. Just this past season, events held by some of the 28 FANHS Chapters included a documentary film premiere in Sonoma (CA), book launches with jazz in Berkeley (CA), a film festival in Vallejo (CA), a collaborative museum exhibit in New Mexico, a symposium in Portland (OR), and a nationally recognized speaker’s banquet in Philadelphia (PA). FANHS Hampton Roads (VA) published two oral history collections through a unique intergenerational collaboration between high school student groups, professional organizations, community elders, professors, local leaders.

Filmmakers , writers, scholars, artists, students, elders have used the thousands of artifacts —print materials, oral histories, photographs, and other memorabilia —housed in the FANHS National Archives in Seattle, Washington. You’ve seen FANHS photos and documents on book covers, in multimedia curricula, in films, in museums, and in the Smithsonian’s current traveling exhibit, “Singgalot: The Ties that Bind.”

Generations have also been inspired by the 12 biennial national FANHS conferences that draw from 300 - 600 plus participants to memorable panels, films, authors’ receptions, awards banquets, and historic tours. FANHS is one of the few national conferences that subsidizes the registration of youth participants.

Many “former FANHS youth” are now in leadership positions where they’re making a positive impact in academic institutions, in their own businesses and communities, and as young political leaders.

Now, more than ever before, FANHS — that’s always run on a slim budget managed by volunteer staff — needs your support to continue its work. At the world premiere of "The Great Pinoy Boxing Era" at the 1994 FANHS National Conference in San Francisco, an enthusiastic crowd gave producer/director Corky Pasquil of FANHS LA Chapter a standing ovation.

Directors of "Little Manila: Filipinos in California's Heartland" worked closely with FANHS Stockton Chapter members as well as consultants from the Little Manila Foundation. Professor Dawn Mabalon, FANHS National Trustee, is interviewed in the video.

FANHS Wisconsin Chapter Receives Award

As a FANHS National Trustee and President of FANHS Wisconsin Chapter, P.Emraida Kiram wrote:

"Attached is the award FANHS WI received for its participation this weekend at the International Holiday Folk Fair, presenting "Textiles from the Philippines". I will prepare a more comprehensive report when the photos are ready. The FANHS WI chapter is still euphoric, since this is its FIRST participation, and did not realize there were awards. 2008 is the Holiday Folk Fair's 65th Year.

I scanned the image so everyone can see their accomplishments. Great
team work! As Mrs. Durtka said, "I did not give it to you, you earned
it!" (With a smile and a hug). Happy Thanksgiving to you all! We earned

Recent update: The November 8th opening reception for this exhibit was a huge success! While 50 people are generally expected at historical exhibits such as these, organizers prepared Filipino and Mexican food for 100 people. FANHS Trustee Dely Alacantara reported that more than 200 people attended the opening reception!!

Reflections on Filipino American History Month, 2008

As FANHS begins its 26th year during this season of hopeful new beginnings, I'll share some reflections on Filipino American History Month -- a concept that FANHS created in 1988.

On the first of October in 2008, Barack Obama wrote: "I appreciate the opportunity to join the Filipino American National Historical Society and its
friends in celebrating Filipino American History Month. This celebration is a wonderful opportunity to honor the values and traditions of Filipino Americans, and your role in the story of America..." The complete letter written by President Elect Obama may be found here:

FANHS Stockton (CA) Chapter
Terri Torres wrote:
"October was a great month for Stockton FANHS - we had exhibits at the local library, participated in the lobby display for the play "The Romance of Magno Rubio" - a great play, by the way! We also co-sponsored a symposium about Carlos Bulosan with Dawn Mabalon and a booksigning of Riz Raymundo's "Tomorrow's Memories" - both at the library. We also participated in Pleasanton's first Filipino American History month event - showing the PBS doc "Little Manila", and met with students from Berkeley at the Daguhoy Lodge and spoke a little about our history, again, with Dawn and others from the Little Manila Foundation. We also held our annual FANHS Stockton Community Recognition Awards, for the 9th year, and honored 5 Filipino Americans for their contributions to the Stockton area. They were Raquel "Nancy" Andres, Gloria Carido Nomura, Pilar Reynon, Tony Somera, and posthumously, Larry Itliong. Each chapter pres should have gotten our October newsletter with a little info about each honoree. It turned out very well! This is also a fundraiser for our chapter expenses. It's been a busy month!"

FANHS East Bay (Berkeley - Oakland, CA) Chapter
A message from Vangie Buell, FANHS East Bay Chapter & FANHS National Vice President:
"We have been extremely busy especially in the planning of the launching of our book Filipinos in the East Bay which was launched at International House at UC Berkeley on Sept 25 (about 300 attended) and it was a multi-media event with "Little Brown Brothers" Jazz band, folk singers, and spoken word poets, along with our power point presentation of the book..an exciting event. Of course lots of food."

FANHS PA officers -- the youngest of our FANHS national network of 28 chapters -- organized a successful first Filipino American history (ten course :-) banquet with more than 100 guests on October 17. The inspiring event featured guest speaker Juanita Tamayo Lott (of Washington, DC) and drew community leaders from St. Augustine Church Choir, Asian Americans United (AAU), Filipino Executive Council of Greater Philadelphia (FECGP --24 orgs), Philippine Folk Arts Society (PFASI), Drexel University's School of Ed & Multicultural Collaborative, Asian Arts Initiative (AAI), Asian American Women's Coalition (AAWC), Scribe Video Center, OCA Philly Chapter, MUTYA, FISDU, TUPAC, University of Maryland College Park, and Southeast Asian Mutual Assistance Associations Coalition (SEAMAAC). A Resolution

OCTOBER IS
FILIPINO AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH

WHEREAS, the Filipino American National Historical Society had declared the Year 1988 to be the 225th Anniversary of the Permanent Settlement of Filipinos in the Continental United States and had set into motion its year-long, national observance in order to focus on the story of our nation's past from a new perspective by concentrating on the critically economic, cultural, social and other notable contributions Filipino Americans had made in countless ways toward the development of United States History; and

WHEREAS, efforts must continue to promote the study of Filipino American history and culture, so mandated in the mission statement of the Filipino American National Historical Society, because the role of Filipino Americans and those of other People of Color have been overlooked in the writings, teachings and learnings of United States History; and

WHEREAS, it is imperative for Filipino American youths to have positive role models and to instill in them the importance of education, complemented with the richness of their ethnicity and the values of their legacy; and

WHEREAS, the earliest documented proof of Filipino presence in the Continental United States falls on October 1587, more recently published by Lorraine Jacobs Crouchett in her book, Filipinos in California (1982), annotating John Walton Caughey in his book, California (1953), and that definitive dates of written landings on the shores of California have been recorded with the earliest on October 18, 1587, according to Crouchett, annotating H.R. Wagner's Unamuno's Voyage to California in 1587 in the Quarterly of the California Historical Society (July 1923), among others;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Trustees of the Filipino American National Historical Society establish Filipino American History Month and that it be observed annually and nationally throughout the United States and its Territories during the Month of October, commencing in the Year 1992 to mark the 405th Anniversary of the Presence of Filipinos in the Continental United States as a significant time to study the advancement of Filipino Americans in the history of the United States, as a favorable time of celebration, remembrance, reflection and motivation, and as a relevant time to renew more efforts towards research, examination and promulgation of Filipino American history and culture in order to provide an opportunity for all Americans to learn and appreciate more about Filipino Americans and their historic contributions to our nation, these United States of America.###

She was founding chair of the Pilipino Studies Planning Group and special assistant to the first Dean of the School of Ethnic Studies, San Francisco State in 1970. After graduating cum laude, she was awarded a Ph.D fellowship in the social sciences, specializing in sociology and demography at the University of Chicago.

From the Midwest, Juanita moved to the Washington, D.C. area. Since 1973 her community and professional work has been primarily at the national level as a manager or analyst ensuring statistical and demographic perspectives in public policies. Juanita began her career at the National Center of Education Statistics analyzing data on Title 1 students. She then led the Asian American Affairs Office at
DHEW during the fall of Vietnam with entry of refugees; ensuring Asian Pacific Islander representation in the planning and conduct of the 1980 Census; and chairing the 1975 working group of the Federal Interagency Committteee on Education that developed the racial and ethnic categories for the the federal statistical system. She was the first Asian American division director at the US Commission on Civil
Rights, 1980-82; first Asian American research associate at the Committee on National Statistics, National Academy of Sciences 1993-94, and first Filipino American section officer, American Statistical Association, 2005-06. In 1997 she joined the US. Census Bureau as special assistant to the Director in preparation for the 2000 Census and subsequently directed the 2010 Census Planning Unit. Her current work is on competitve human capital in a 21st century global eonomy, focusing on the role of civil servants.

Pioneering Federal projects directed by Juanita resulted in various publications including the classic 1976 Asian American Data Reference Directory and the 1977 Asian American Field Survey (DHEW); 1981 Child Care and Equal Opportunity for Women and 1982 The Federal Response to Domestic Violence (USCCR). Her professional publications include: Common Destiny: Filipino American Generations, 2006; "Population Shifts and Demographic Methods," with C. Matthew Snipp, American Statistical Association/international Joint Statistical Meetings Proceedings, 2003," Asian
Americans: From Racial Category to Multiple Identities, 1998, and the Asian American Almanac, 1995. Her latest manuscript is on racial, ethnic, and gender bias in education statistics for the 2008 International Encyclopedia of Education.

Juanita is a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Asian American Studies . She currently serves on the President's Council of the Population Reference Bureau and is an advisor for Filipino American Studies, University of Maryland, College Park.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Alaska chapter of the Filipino
American National Historical Society (FANHS), led by
Dr. Aurora Salazar Hovland, proudly celebrated its
25th anniversary with its 12th Biennial Conference at
the Anchorage Hilton Hotel July 3-5, 2008, drawing
more than 300 delegates from all over the United
States to the land of the midnight sun.

“The Lure of the Salmon Song” was the theme of the
conference, referring to the tens of thousands of
Filipino “Alaskeros” who have worked in the Alaskan
canneries since 1915. In 1930 alone, there were 4,200
Filipino cannery workers in Alaska. Their numbers
swelled to 9,000 a decade later but by 1976, there
were down to just 1,200. Their numbers are
insignificant now.

A highlight of the conference=2 0was the Friday morning
plenary session on the “Alaskero Experience” with
former Alaskeros sharing their recollections of their
time at the canneries. Dr. Alan Bergano, a dentist in
Virginia Beach, West Virginia, was a student at the
University of Washington when he and his girl friend
(now his wife), Edwina Lapa, worked several summers in
Alaska to pay for their college education.

Also sharing their mostly bitter experiences were
Larry Flores of Seattle, Oscar Peñaranda from Union
City, California, Ray Guimary from Portland, Ray
Pascua from Yakima, Washington and Jesse Tabasa from
Aptos, California. They spoke of working 16 to 23 hour
days standing on their feet as they sorted tens of
thousands of salmon, eating nothing but rice and
salmon for breakfast, lunch and dinner and living in
crowded segregated bunk huts.

Anthony Ogilvie, Dean of Continuing & Professional
Education at Seattle Central Community College and
chair of the historic 1971 Young Filipino People’s Far
West Convention held in Seattle, explained how
segregation at the canneries worked. Because he was
mistaken for being “white”, the cannery bosses gave
him the easy job of doing mail call, where he spent
most of his “working” days just sleepin g in more
accommodating quarters and getting paid far more than
his brown-skinned brothers. (Yes, he felt guilty about
it).

The FANHS Conference was dedicated to the memory of
Thelma Garcia Buchholdt, the former 3-term national
FANHS president who initiated the holding of the FANHS
national conference in her home state of Alaska.
Unfortunately, Thelma did not live to see the fruition
of her efforts as she died of pancreatic cancer on
November 5, 2007.

Thelma had immigrated to the US in 1951 and was
enrolled in graduate studies at the University of
Nevada in Las Vegas in 1956 when she met Jon
Buchholdt, a fellow student. After they married in
1957, Thelma and Jon Buchholdt, and their 4 kids,
moved to Anchorage in 1965 and Thelma immersed herself
in the local community. In 1974, she was elected to
the Alaska State Legislature from a mostly-white
assembly district, becoming the first
Filipino-American woman elected to public office in
the United States. In 1980, she was elected the first
Asian-American president of the National Order of
Women Legislators.

While her eldest daughter, Titania, was enrolled at
Georgetown University School of Law, Thelma and her
husband, Jon joined her in Washington DC and enrolled
at the District of Columbia School of Law in 1991.
Father, mother and daughter all took and passed the
Alaska bar.

In 1996, Thelma published her landmark book Filipinos
in Alaska: 1788-1958 (Aborigina l Press) which provides
detailed information about the first Filipinos
recorded to set foot in Alaska. Her research
established that a British ship, the Iphigenia
Nubiana, under the command of Capt. William Douglas,
left Zamboanga on February 2, 1788 and landed in the
Cook Inlet in Alaska on June 17, 1788 with a “Manilla
Man” as part of the crew.

In that same year, Capt. Simon Metcalfe, an American
fur trader, brought his ship Eleanora to “Manilla” for
repairs and hired 30 “Manilla Men” to be part of his
crew. Five of these “Manilla Men” were assigned to the
other Metcalfe-owned ship, Fair American, in China.
Both ships then sailed to Alaska where they landed
with their “Manilla Men” crew in the summer of 1789.

When Thelma died in November of 2007, the state’s
governor ordered all flags in the state to be flown at
half mast to honor Thelma Buchholdt and her
contributions to Alaska.

Dr. Joan May Timtiman Cordova, a Drexel University
professor in Philadelphia, with a doctorate from
Harvard University, was elected FANHS national
president. Elected national vice-president was
Evangeline Canonizado Buell from Berkeley, California,
author of Twenty Five Chickens and a Pig for a Bride:
Growing Up in a Filipino Immigrant Family. Elected
Secretary was Ron Buenaventura from San Diego,
California. Elected Treasurer was Fran Alayu Womack
of Chicago, Illinois.

While FANHS was incorporated in Washington state in
1985, it is celebrating its 25th anniversary at the
conference because it traces its beginnings to the
publication of Fred Cordova’s landmark 1983 book,
Filipinos, Forgotten Asian Americans (edited by
Dorothy Laigo Cordova). If the US can celebrate the
birth of its independence in 1776, instead of 1789
when the US government was first established, why
can’t FANHS do the same?

The next FANHS national conference will be held in
Seattle in July of 2010. Be there or be square.

To decide on each panel's title, it's been great that panelists have been in engaging in on-line dialogue and getting to know each other before the conference. In light of ongoing dialogue, some of these titles will change by conference time.

FILIPINO AMERICAN NATIONAL HISTORICAL SOCIETY HOLDS ITS 12TH BIENNIAL CONFERENCE IN ANCHORAGE, ALASKA, JULY 3 THROUGH 5

Anchorage, Alaska, June 16, 2008–The Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) will host its 12th Biennial National Conference, “Lure of the Salmon Song,” at the Hilton Hotel in Anchorage, Alaska, July 3 through 5, 2008. FANHS will also celebrate its 25th anniversary and honor three-term FANHS National President and former Alaska State Representative Thelma Buchholdt who recently passed away. The FANHS National Conference is open to those interested in learning and preserving Filipino American history. Registration and payment are required to attend.

The FANHS National Conference will highlight the stories of the Alaskeros, Filipino immigrants who worked in the Alaskan canneries in the early to mid-1900s. The Alaskeros faced harsh winters, discrimination, long hours and low wages; however, they worked hard to earn a decent living and to support their families. Over the years, Alaska’s Filipino American community rapidly grew. Hence, Dr. Aurora Hovland, FANHS Alaska Chapter Conference Coordinator organized the panel, “Alaska: Roots Beyond the Canneries” that focuses on experiences of more recent immigrants.

On July 2, pre-registered conference attendees will tour the Kenai Canneries. Workshops and plenaries will be held July 3 through 5; topics include “Double Identities: Alaska Native/Filipinos,” “Alaskero Experiences,” and “Pin@y Educational Partnerships,” to name a few. Already scheduled are more than 100 presentations on historical and regional research, educational curriculum, “how-to” workshops, identity, advocacy for Filipino World War II veterans and more. An Authors’ Reception will take place on the evening of July 3, and a banquet and silent auction are planned for July 5.

In 1982, Drs. Fred and Dorothy Cordova founded the Filipino American National Historical Society, a community-based organization, “to preserve, document, and present Filipino American history and to support scholarly research and artistic works which reflect that rich past.” Housed in Seattle, Wash., the national office and archives lend expertise and support to 28 chapters across the United States and is the primary resource on Filipino Americans.

2. If you are sending books by mail, it is now *too late* to send via USPS Media Mail!

If you send books by First Class, allow three to six weeks for the books to arrive -- which means it is too late to send via First Class unless you are sending from the Seattle area.

If you are going to mail books ahead and you have not yet done so, you must send via Priority Mail no later than two weeks prior to the start of the conference! Yes, the USPS does advertise that Priority Mail "usually" takes two to three days. Note, this "usual" delivery time does not apply to items sent to Alaska or Hawaii!

Because it is now too late to mail books to the conference other than by Priority Mail, consider using FedEx or UPS Ground no later than this week. Delivery takes about 7 to 10 days from the West Coast. Check with your local FedEx or UPS office for the delivery time range from your location.
